The Houston Museum of Natural Science (HMNS), located in Houston, Texas, is one of the nation’s premier natural history museums, attracting approximately 2 million visitors annually, making it the most visited museum in Houston and the state of Texas. Renowned for its extensive collections, including one of the most significant gem and mineral exhibits in the world, HMNS offers exceptional educational experiences in science and the natural world. The Cockrell Foundation made its first grant to HMNS in 1974. Given the museum’s strong emphasis on natural science—particularly earth sciences and mineralogy—and its alignment with the interests of the Foundation’s founding donors, HMNS was designated as a major focus organization of The Cockrell Foundation.
