1957

Dula Dashiell Cockrell establishes a charitable trust – the Cockrell Trust - the origin of the Cockrell Foundation

1966

Dula’s son, Ernest Cockrell Jr, and his wife, Virginia Harris Cockrell, transform the Cockrell Trust into The Cockrell Foundation with Dula’s support.

1972

Upon Ernest Cockrell Jr.’s untimely death, his estate provided significant funding to the foundation, including a transformative bequest to The University of Texas at Austin that made engineering a core priority.

1972

The Cockrell Foundation’s first grant to the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

1974

The Cockrell Foundation’s first grant to Houston Methodist.

The Cockrell Foundation’s first grant to the Houston Museum of Natural Science

1983

VHC contributes a portion of her estate into The Cockrell Foundation.

1994

The Cockrell Butterfly Center is built and opened at the Houston Museum of Natural Science.

1998

The Virginia Harris Cockrell Cancer Research at UT MD Anderson Science Park was officially named following a donation from The Cockrell Foundation.

1998

The Cockrell Family Fund, a donor advised fund, is established at the Greater Houston Community Foundation, engaging broader family philanthropy.

2007

The UT System Board of Regents officially renames the Engineering School at UT Austin “The Cockrell School of Engineering”, reflecting decades of transformational support.

2015

The Cockrell Center for Advanced Therapeutics is established at Houston Methodist.

2025

The Cockrell Foundation surpasses $100 million in cumulative giving to the University of Texas at Austin, reflecting decades of sustained commitment.
